Nokia and Intel Collaborate to Create MeeGo
Do we need another netbook OS option? Apparently Intel and Nokia do as they pull together and fuse Moblin and Maemo and create MeeGo.
MeeGo is the latest entrant into the already crowded mobile OS market.
Intel's Vice President of the Software and Services Group says it will be a "single, powerful open source software platform delivering unmatched flexibility".
Nokia's Vice President of Maemo Devices says that it will "take the best of Moblin and Maemo. It helps bring the communities together. It will build a great platform on top of which we can build great products".
Whatever happens, we can be sure of one thing - those looking for an alternate OS to replace the one that comes with their netbook will probably be just as confused as they are today.
That aside, it'll be interesting see if these two giants can collaborate successfully or whether they'll try to design an horse and end up with a camel. It's being touted as "so strings attached" platform for developers to get the most from mobile devices.
The expectation is that MeeGo based devices will be on the market later this year. This is an interesting statement as it suggests that MeeGo will appear on devices out of the box. That will mean that by the end of 2010 we'll have a choice between Windows 7. Chrome OS and MeeGo hardware.
